At APCH, we take the time with those who come to us for help determine if our services are the right ones for every individual and situation. Referrals to alternative facilities are made if APCH is not the right place to best serve an individual’s needs. Caring and experienced staff are available around the clock to provide information, guidance, and an understanding ear. Our hostel operates within a community environment approach with all of our guests working in unison to maintain a positive and safe environment.

Our facility provides private and semi-private rooms, three meals a day, laundry and showering facilities along with access to telephones as needed for contacting landlords, employers, and other community supports.

Individuals and families staying at our shelter will work with our client support workers who will help them develop an individual plan of action designed to help identify individual needs and overcome the specific barriers they face in finding safe and sustainable housing.

Based on a needs assessment, referrals to community partners will be made and our staff will advocate on behalf of clients whenever necessary.

Prevention

PREVENTING HOMELESSNESS, ONE STEP AT A TIME…
A Place Called Home assists individuals and families participate in programs intended to prevent eviction from their primary residence, avoid disconnection of an essential utility, replace a crucial piece of identification, talk out a problem to find a solution and reduce the incidence of homelessness in the City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County. While our core shelter program is the safety net for people who have lost their home, our prevention programs are designed to be a cushion before a crisis leads to homelessness and allows people to stay in their homes.

Outreach/ Aftercare

REACHING OUT…KEEPING THE LINES OPEN…
A Place Called Home’s Outreach and AfterCare Program strives to prevent homelessness. Whether it is a family concerned they may be evicted from their home or a previous guest who is at risk of becoming homeless again, this program is designed to assist with various concerns or circumstances that, if left unresolved, could result in homelessness.

The only requirement for participation is that those in need are not currently residing in the shelter and have an extenuating circumstance that may threaten, or currently threatens, their ability to maintain their housing.

This program runs 24/7.

Youth Trustee Program

YOU ARE IMPORTANT, STAY CONNECTED…

The Youth Trustee Program is available for youth, ages 16-25 (up to 32 under special circumstances) who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in the City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County.

Youth can drop in and meet with a Youth Trustee Worker or book an appointment at A Place Called Home during our scheduled hours of operation by calling our office at 705-328-0905 or 1-866-520-2689, x.223.

Our Youth Trustee Worker can help with a variety of concerns including (but not limited to) the following:

Finding safe, affordable, and permanent housing
Acting as an appointed trustee for youth ages 16 & 17 as per Ontario Works requirements
Accessing financial assistance and employment
Helping access necessary educational requirements
Assisting with daily life and living skills and making healthy, informed choices
Overcoming barriers
Advocacy
Referrals
